Here's this great PBS
series about our quest to understand the natural world, and using these discoveries to improve human health and happiness. I'm watching the episode on medicine and health:
A Matter of Life and Death. It's been so long since thousands or hundreds of thousands of people suffered and died every year of such diseases as bubonic plague, pellagra, diabetes, etc, that it's easy for us to take modern medicine for granted. In their own times, medical pioneers such as Louis Pasteur, Joseph Goldberger, and Jonas Salk faced ridicule and disbelief as, one by one, they discovered the causes and treatments of disease.
I found this video series posted on
Youtube, but you can also get them on
Netflix.
